Su Hua’s art is more like a product of marrying the realism of the Central Plains region with the magicalism of Tianjin. He’s excellent at capturing the culture and vibes of a locality, hence the mixture of the special clamorous, marketplace and bantering accents of two localities. This impression, however, is presented more in a way of skimming in Su’s art; he has no intention of going deep into any particular figure in a work, and that’s why the technique of scumbling and even blank-leaving are adopted in his work, to keep feelings alive, but not to linger upon any symbol or metaphor in the picture. The visual impact of a highly-saturated work feels quite like stepping into rushing water where one has his personal experience interacting and clashing with real and historical experience. For the artist, it’s more like a rather interesting interactive experience to step into rushing water and have such experience presented.
