Around 2011, when Zhang Yu spent many years working on a sole subject in her painting – roses, despite a turn from representational to abstract expression. When she embarked on painting, it took her a long “hardworking” time to enable the roses she painted to represent and express her wishes and state of mind. Painstakingly, she was trying to challenge the standards of academic painting and found its limitations and constraints in no time, which triggered her gradual turn to a kind of painting that defies external standards. She started to focus back on the subjects she loved when she was young, or, particularly, her favorite subjects from the time when she devoted herself to carving and textile pattern design.
